The knock that came on my office door forced my eyes in that direction.

Standing in front of me was Jesse Hale. He was not only a coworker, but he was also one of my closest friends. For that reason, he didn’t even wait for me to invite him in. He simply strolled in and took a seat in the chair on the opposite side of my desk.

He was wearing a smirk on his face, a look that told me there was something brewing inside his head. If there was one thing I’d learned, it was to just dive right in and deal with whatever it was.

“What’s going on?” I asked.

Jesse sighed. “Nothing really. I’ve just been hearing some ramblings around the office about your latest client.”

“Is that so? And what exactly is it that you’re hearing?” I questioned him as I leaned forward and pressed my forearms on the desk.

He grinned. “Mostly it’s been that you’ve been spending a significant amount of time with Lily Mack.”

I cocked an eyebrow.

I never really thought the guys I worked with were much for gossip, so this news definitely struck me as odd. I couldn’t even imagine what nonsense they could have come up with; I couldn’t imagine how they had the time.

Then, it dawned on me.

“Is Avalon behind this?” I asked.

Jesse let out a laugh. “How did you know?”

I shook my head. Avalon McCoy was our receptionist. Her brother, Magnus, worked in our kidnap and ransom unit. She’d worked for us for as long as I could remember, and we all loved her to death. But there was no denying that she had a penchant for gossip.

The thing was, I knew that, and it didn’t necessarily stop me from answering her questions over the last week when she’d asked about Lily. That could have been because I simply enjoyed talking about Lily, or it might have been because Avalon was just that good at getting information out of anyone.

“I’ve got to learn to keep my mouth shut around that one,” I mumbled.

“So, it’s true, then?” Jesse declared.

I threw my hands up and said, “I’m not confirming anything, because I can’t even imagine what it is that you heard or were told.”

He shrugged. “It’s just that you’ve been spending a lot of time with a client who hasn’t exactly hired us for bodyguard services. And I know you’re efficient and well versed in security camera installation. That doesn’t seem to line up with as many visits as you’ve apparently made. I guess I’m just curious if you’re going against everything you’ve ever stood for. I mean, it’s unlike you to ever consider crossing that line.”

Crossing that line.

I’d been waging a war with myself for weeks now in an effort not to cross that line. It was becoming more and more difficult, and I’d only recently decided it was time to do something about it.

“Technically, there is nothing like that going on, and I haven’t officially crossed any lines,” I informed him.

“But you think you might want to?” Jesse questioned me.
